Huế, Vietnam travel guide
Vietnam's imperial capital: citadel walls, royal tombs and Perfume River pagodas in the country's most poetic city.
- Best time to visit: February-April
- Average daily budget: $25 to $60 USD
- Ideal trip length: 2 to 3 days
Huế was Vietnam's capital for 143 years, and the Nguyen dynasty left behind a walled citadel, seven royal tombs strung along the Perfume River, and a cuisine so refined it has its own category: imperial food. It's Vietnam at its most atmospheric, all mist, incense and dragon boats. Joy Plus strings the tombs, citadel and river pagodas into days that flow as calmly as the river itself.

Getting around
Fly into Phu Bai Airport (30 minutes from town) or take the train along the famous Hai Van Pass route from Da Nang (2.5 to 3 hours), one of Asia's great rail journeys. In the city, Grab bikes and cars are cheap and plentiful; bicycles and scooters are the classic way to reach the tombs. Cyclos still ply the citadel area, agree the price first.
Safety
Huế is very safe and one of Vietnam's most relaxed cities. The main practical issues are traffic when cycling and the weather: Huế is famously wet from September to December, with serious flooding possible. In the hot season (May-August) start sightseeing early. At the tombs, paths can be slippery after rain; wear proper shoes.
Frequently asked questions
Is Huế worth visiting?
Yes, it's one of Vietnam's essential stops. Nowhere else has the combination of a full imperial citadel, a string of wildly different royal tombs and a cuisine developed to serve emperors. It's also calmer and cheaper than Hanoi or Ho Chi Minh City, and pairs perfectly with Hoi An and Da Nang.
How many days do you need in Huế?
Two to three. One day for the Imperial City and Dong Ba Market, one for the tomb circuit (Khai Dinh, Minh Mang, Tu Duc) and Thien Mu Pagoda by boat, and a spare day for the food trail, Thanh Toan bridge or the abandoned water park.
How do you get from Da Nang or Hoi An to Huế?
The train over the Hai Van Pass (2.5 to 3 hours from Da Nang) is one of Asia's most scenic rail rides; sit on the left heading north. Buses and private cars take the tunnel (about 2 hours) or the pass road (3 hours). From Hoi An it's 3 to 4 hours by car or shuttle.
Which royal tomb in Huế is the best?
Khai Dinh's is the most spectacular: a steep staircase up to a palace encrusted with porcelain and glass mosaics. Minh Mang's is the most harmonious, with lakes and symmetrical gardens. Tu Duc's is the most poetic, built as a retreat where the emperor actually lived. See all three if you can.
When is the best time to visit Huế?
February to April: warm, dry(ish) and green. Huế is Vietnam's wettest city; September to December brings heavy rain and occasional floods. May to August is hot and humid (35°C+). Pack for rain whatever the forecast says.
What food is Huế famous for?
Huế has Vietnam's most refined regional cuisine. Bun bo Hue (spicy beef noodle soup) is the headline, but the imperial small dishes are the real treasure: banh beo (steamed rice cakes), banh khoai (crispy pancakes), com hen (clam rice) and dozens of che desserts. Portions are small, so order many.
Can you do Huế as a day trip from Da Nang?
You can, but it's rushed: the citadel alone deserves half a day, and you'd miss the tomb circuit and the food scene. If time is short, take the early train over Hai Van Pass, do the citadel and Khai Dinh tomb, and return late. Better: stay one or two nights.
