Khao Lak, Thailand travel guide

Quiet Andaman beaches, jungle national parks, and the Similan gateway.

  • Best time to visit: November to April
  • Average daily budget: $50 to $100
  • Ideal trip length: 4 to 5 days

Khao Lak is Phuket's calm neighbor: a 20 kilometre string of low key beaches backed by national park jungle, with none of the party crowds. It is the launch point for the Similan and Surin Islands, two of the world's best snorkeling and diving spots, and a family favorite for long beach walks, sea turtle season and easy day trips to Phang Nga Bay.

Khao Lak itinerary

Day 1, Get oriented

Morning: Day trip to the Similan Islands. Snorkel or dive the famous granite islands with the clearest water in Thailand, open roughly late October to mid May.

Afternoon: Explore Bang Niang, The lively middle strip with night market, beach clubs, mid range resorts and the best restaurant choice.

Evening: Visit Bang Niang night market. Mondays, Wednesdays and Saturdays: grilled seafood, mango sticky rice and cheap clothes in a friendly local market.

Day 2, Go deeper

Morning: Cruise Phang Nga Bay. Sea canoe through limestone caves into hidden lagoons at James Bond Island and Hong by Starlight.

Afternoon: Explore Nang Thong, The original tourist beach with a relaxed village feel, walkable restaurants and good swimming sand.

Evening: Swim in the Ton Chong Fa waterfall. A multi tier jungle waterfall in Khao Lak Lam Ru National Park, 30 minutes inland, with pools to cool off in.

Day 3, Hidden side

Morning: Walk the Khao Lak-Lam Ru coastal trails. Jungle paths behind the beaches to hidden coves and the small Cape Pakarang turtle project.

Afternoon: Explore Khuk Khak, Quieter southern stretch with big name resorts, wide empty beaches and easy access to the Turtle sanctuary.

Evening: Take a Thai cooking class. Many resorts and small schools run half day classes starting with a market tour and ending with your own curry paste.

Getting around

Khao Lak stretches 20 kilometres along Highway 4, so rent a scooter (250 to 350 baht a day) or use the local green songthaew buses that crawl the main road. Taxis and Grab work but are pricier than Phuket. Phuket airport is 80 minutes north; Krabi airport 2 hours. Boat piers for the Similans are at Thap Lamu, 15 minutes south.

Safety

Khao Lak is very safe and family friendly. Main cautions: strong rip currents on some beaches in low season (November is calm), jellyfish in the Similan season, and scooter accidents on the winding coastal road. The December 2004 tsunami reshaped this coast; all hotels now have clear evacuation routes and warning systems.

Frequently asked questions

Is Khao Lak better than Phuket?

For quiet, Khao Lak wins: lower key beaches, fewer parties, better access to the Similan Islands and Phang Nga Bay. Phuket has more nightlife, shopping and flight connections. Many travelers combine both, or choose Khao Lak for a week of genuine relaxation.

When can I visit the Similan Islands?

The national park is open roughly late October to mid May, closing for the monsoon and ecosystem recovery. Trips run as fast catamaran day tours or two day one night camping trips. Book a small group speedboat for fewer crowds, and remember the park bans single use plastics.

What is the best area to stay in Khao Lak?

Bang Niang is the best all rounder: beach, night market, restaurants and mid range resorts. Nang Thong suits a village feel, Khuk Khak suits quiet luxury. Avoid the far south if you want to walk to restaurants; the strip is too long to walk everywhere.

How many days do I need in Khao Lak?

Four to five days: one for the Similans, one for Phang Nga Bay or Khao Sok, and the rest for beaches, waterfalls and the night market. A week lets you add a Khao Sok overnight in a floating rafthouse, one of Thailand's best jungle experiences.

How do I get to Khao Lak from Phuket airport?

Prebooked transfer or taxi takes 80 minutes (1,200 to 1,800 baht). Shared minibuses are cheaper at 500 to 700 baht but stop at hotels. Buses from Phuket town to Takua Pa drop at the highway junction, less convenient with luggage.

Is Khao Lak good for families with kids?

Yes, it is one of Thailand's most family friendly beach towns: calm shallow water at Nang Thong, resorts with kids clubs, easy day trips, and low key nightlife. The Similan day trips accept children from around 4 years on most boats; confirm lifejacket sizes when booking.

What is the best time of year for Khao Lak?

November to April is dry season with calm seas, best for swimming and island trips. The Similans close from mid May, and May to October brings afternoon rain and rougher seas, though the jungle is lush and prices drop by a third. Sea turtle nesting happens November to February.
