Koh Lanta, Thailand travel guide
Long quiet beaches and slow west-coast sunsets without the Krabi crowds.
- Best time to visit: November-April
- Average daily budget: $35 to $110 USD
- Ideal trip length: 4 to 6 days
Koh Lanta is the Andaman island people move to when Phi Phi gets too loud. Nine beaches run down its west coast, each a little emptier than the last, with a road along the spine, sea gypsy villages in the south and an old Chinese-Thai trading town on the east side that most visitors never bother to find.

Getting around
One road runs the length of the island, so a scooter at 200-250 baht a day is how nearly everyone gets around. Tuk-tuks cost 100-300 baht depending on distance and are pricey for repeat trips. Ferries from Krabi take two hours, from Phi Phi 90 minutes, and in low season you switch to minivans over the two car bridges.
Safety
Koh Lanta is calm and safe, with scooter accidents on the steep southern hills the biggest real hazard, so wear a helmet and check your insurance covers riding. Sandflies bite on some beaches at dusk. Swimming is dangerous during the May to October monsoon, when strong currents run and many west-coast businesses close entirely.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Koh Lanta?
Four to six days suits the island's pace. Two days for beaches and sunsets, one for the Four Islands or Koh Rok boat trip, one for the national park and Old Town, and a spare to do nothing. People routinely arrive for three nights and extend, because there is nothing here forcing you to move.
Which beach is best in Koh Lanta?
Klong Dao for families and calm shallow water, Long Beach for restaurants and the most choice of accommodation, Kantiang Bay for scenery and sunsets, and Bamboo Bay if you want almost nobody around. The beaches get quieter and prettier the further south you go, but also further from services.
How do you get to Koh Lanta?
Fly to Krabi (KBV), then take a two-hour ferry in high season for around 400 baht, or a 2.5-hour minivan over the two bridges year-round for about 350 baht. From Phi Phi the ferry takes 90 minutes. From Phuket allow four to five hours by combined ferry or van.
When is the best time to visit Koh Lanta?
November to April is the dry season with calm seas and every business open. December and January are the busiest and priciest. May to October is monsoon: many west-coast resorts and restaurants close outright, boat trips stop, and swimming is unsafe, though prices fall to a third.
Is Koh Lanta better than Phi Phi?
For most travellers over 25, yes. Lanta has longer beaches, far fewer crowds, real Thai villages and a fraction of the noise. Phi Phi has more dramatic scenery and a party scene Lanta lacks entirely. You can day trip to Phi Phi from Lanta, which is how many people split the difference.
Is Koh Lanta expensive?
Cheaper than Phuket or Phi Phi. Bungalows run $20 to $40, mid-range beach resorts $60 to $120, and a Thai meal $3 to $6. Scooter hire is 200 baht a day, a Four Islands trip around 1,200 baht including lunch and park fees. Budget $45 to $60 a day comfortably outside peak December.
Do you need a scooter in Koh Lanta?
It helps a lot. The island is 30km long with one road, and tuk-tuks add up quickly at 100-300 baht per trip. If you stay on Long Beach and eat locally you can manage without one. To reach Old Town, the national park or the southern bays, hire a scooter or budget for taxis.
