Koh Phangan, Thailand travel guide

Far more than the Full Moon Party: jungle waterfalls, yoga bays and some of Thailand's best beaches.

  • Best time to visit: December-March, July-August
  • Average daily budget: $30 to $70 USD
  • Ideal trip length: 3 to 5 days

Koh Phangan has a split personality, and both halves are excellent. The south hosts the world's most famous beach party; the north and east hide quiet bays, jungle waterfalls and a wellness scene of yoga schools and retreat centres that has made the island a global hub. Come for either, stay for both. Joy Plus matches your base to your vibe and times the beaches, boats and parties perfectly.

Getting around

There's no airport: fly to Koh Samui and take the 30-minute ferry, or take a ferry from Surat Thani, Chumphon or Donsak on the mainland (often bundled with flight or train tickets to Bangkok). On the island, songthaew taxis run fixed routes and scooters are the standard rental, but the hills are steep and accident rates are high, so only ride if experienced and always with a helmet.

Safety

The island is generally safe, but scooter accidents are the number-one tourist injury: the roads are steep, sandy and busy. At Full Moon, watch drinks, keep valuables at your accommodation, wear shoes on the beach (broken glass) and arrange transport home in advance. Swim within your limits, and check for box jellyfish warnings in season (roughly July-October).

Frequently asked questions

Is Koh Phangan worth visiting if you don't party?

Absolutely. The Full Moon Party is one beach on one night a month. The rest of the island offers quiet northern bays, jungle waterfalls, world-class yoga and wellness centres in Srithanu, excellent diving and the Ang Thong marine park next door. Many visitors never go near Haad Rin.

How do you get to Koh Phangan?

There's no airport. Most travellers fly to Koh Samui and take a 30-minute ferry, or take ferries from mainland piers (Donsak near Surat Thani, or Chumphon for boats from Bangkok). Combined bus/boat and train/boat tickets from Bangkok are easy to book and budget-friendly.

When is the Full Moon Party?

Every month on the night of the full moon, on Haad Rin beach. Dates shift around Buddhist holidays, so check the official calendar. Book accommodation weeks ahead for party week, and note prices spike across the island, especially in the south.

How many days do you need on Koh Phangan?

Three to five. Two days for beaches and a waterfall or viewpoint, one for the Ang Thong marine park day trip, and extra days for yoga classes, diving or simply settling into island pace. If you're coming for Full Moon, arrive at least two days early.

When is the best time to visit Koh Phangan?

December to March for dry, calm conditions. July and August are also good with a brief dry window. October to early December is the monsoon peak with heavy rain and rough seas, when some boats and businesses pause.

Where should I stay on Koh Phangan?

Haad Rin or Baan Tai for the party scene; Srithanu for yoga, wellness and sunsets; the north coast (Bottle Beach, Chaloklum) for seclusion and nature; Thong Sala for convenience and markets. Roads between coasts are rough, so pick your base by vibe.

Is Koh Phangan expensive?

It's good value by Western standards: budget bungalows from $20-40, mid-range resorts $60-120, meals $3-10 at local restaurants. Prices spike during Full Moon week and Christmas-New Year. Ferries, scooters and day trips are all inexpensive.
