Getting around
Koh Samui has its own airport with direct flights from Bangkok, Phuket, Singapore and Hong Kong; the budget route is a flight or train to Surat Thani plus bus and ferry, about 4 to 6 hours total. On the island, songthaews circle the ring road, Grab operates, and most visitors rent scooters, though traffic accidents are the island's biggest tourist risk.
Safety
Koh Samui is generally safe with low violent crime; the real dangers are scooter accidents on hilly, sandy roads, so wear a helmet, carry a valid licence and check your insurance. Swim within flagged areas as rip currents occur in monsoon swells, watch for jellyfish warnings, and use ATMs and hotel safes sensibly as petty theft happens in busy areas.
Frequently asked questions
Is Koh Samui worth visiting?
Yes. Samui offers beautiful beaches, excellent food, temples and jungle in a well-developed but still charming package, with hotels from $20 bungalows to five-star villas. Its weather also peaks from January to April when the Andaman coast turns wet, making it the smart choice for an early-year Thailand trip.
How many days do you need in Koh Samui?
Four to six days. That covers two or three beach days, an Ang Thong marine park trip, the temples and waterfalls, and a night at Fisherman's Village. Add days if you're combining Koh Phangan or Koh Tao, which are one to two hours away by ferry.
When is the best time to visit Koh Samui?
December to April, the dry season, with 26 to 32°C and calm seas. Unlike Phuket, Samui's heaviest rain falls October to December, peaking in November. May to September is hot with occasional short storms and is a decent-value shoulder period.
Koh Samui or Phuket: which is better?
It depends on timing and taste. Samui is smaller, greener and more relaxed with a village feel; Phuket is bigger with more nightlife, diving variety and direct international flights. Crucially, their dry seasons oppose: choose Samui December to April or June to September, and Phuket November to April.
How do you get to Koh Samui from Bangkok?
Fly direct in about 70 minutes, the fastest option at roughly 3,000 to 5,000 baht. The budget route combines a flight, train or bus to Surat Thani with a ferry, taking 5 to 8 hours for 1,000 to 2,000 baht. Overnight sleeper trains to Surat Thani plus the morning ferry are a classic.
Is Koh Samui expensive?
It's flexible. Budget $60 to $150 a day: beachfront bungalows start around $25 to $40, mid-range resorts $80 to $150, local meals $3 to $8 and seafood dinners $10 to $20. Chaweng and luxury villas cost more; Maenam and Lamai offer the best value.
Which Koh Samui beach is best?
Chaweng for the longest beach, nightlife and restaurants; Lamai for a similar vibe at a slower pace; Bophut and Fisherman's Village for charm and dining; Maenam for quiet value; and Choeng Mon for calm, family-friendly upmarket bays. First-timers often split between Chaweng and Bophut.
