Montreux, Switzerland travel guide

The Swiss Riviera: palm-lined lake promenades, the Chillon castle and the world's most famous jazz festival.

  • Best time to visit: May-June and September, plus early July for jazz
  • Average daily budget: $180 to $320 USD
  • Ideal trip length: 2 to 4 days

Montreux sits in a sheltered curve of Lake Geneva where palm trees grow at the foot of the Alps. Freddie Mercury recorded here and still stands in bronze on the promenade; Byron carved his name at Chillon castle down the shore. Behind the belle époque hotels rise the terraced Lavaux vineyards and the cogwheel railway to Rochers-de-Naye at 2,042 metres.

Getting around

Montreux is on the main Geneva-to-Milan line, an hour from Geneva airport and 25 minutes from Lausanne, and is the terminus of the GoldenPass panoramic route to Gstaad and Interlaken. The town is walkable along the lake and the Chillon path takes 45 minutes on foot. Boats, buses, the funicular and cogwheel trains cover everything else; a Swiss Travel Pass or regional card usually pays off.

Safety

Montreux is extremely safe with negligible crime, and the main risks are financial rather than physical: Switzerland is expensive and last-minute train tickets are punishing. The lake path can be windy and cold outside summer, mountain weather at Rochers-de-Naye changes fast, and July's jazz festival makes accommodation scarce across the whole Riviera.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Montreux?

Two to three days. One covers the promenade, Chillon castle and the old village, a second the Lavaux vineyards or Rochers-de-Naye, and a third a GoldenPass ride or a boat to Lausanne and Vevey. Longer works well if you use Montreux as a base for western Switzerland.

Is Montreux worth visiting?

Yes, particularly if you like lake scenery, wine and music. The Chillon castle is genuinely outstanding, the Lavaux terraces are UNESCO-listed, and the microclimate keeps the shore mild. It is quieter and more relaxed than Interlaken while still putting the Alps within an hour.

When is the best time to visit Montreux?

May, June and September give 20 to 25°C, green vineyards and lower prices than midsummer. Early July means the Montreux Jazz Festival, with the best atmosphere but packed hotels. Autumn harvest in Lavaux is beautiful, and late November brings a large lakeside Christmas market.

How do you get to Chillon Castle from Montreux?

Walk the lakeside path in about 45 minutes, a lovely flat stroll past Territet. Bus 201 takes 10 minutes, and CGN boats stop at the castle pier in season. Entry is around 15 Swiss francs; arrive at opening or after 4pm to avoid coach groups.

Is Montreux expensive?

Yes, it is Switzerland. Budget $180 to $320 a day. A fondue runs 25 to 35 francs, a Rochers-de-Naye return around 40 to 70 francs, and hotels start near 180 francs, more in July. Supermarket lunches, the Montreux Riviera guest card and rail passes bring costs down meaningfully.

Is the Montreux Jazz Festival free?

Partly. The headline concerts at the Auditorium Stravinski and Montreux Jazz Lab are ticketed and often sell out months ahead, but a large share of the festival, including lakeside stages, workshops and club sets, is free to attend. Book accommodation as soon as the lineup is announced.

Can you day-trip to the Alps from Montreux?

Easily. Rochers-de-Naye is an hour by cogwheel train from the town centre, the GoldenPass reaches Gstaad in about 90 minutes and Interlaken in three hours, and Glacier 3000 is reachable via Aigle in roughly two hours. Check mountain webcams before committing to a summit day.
