Hidden gems
- The Gorges du Chauderon ravine walk starting minutes from the station.
- Saint-Saphorin's tiny wine cellars, quieter than Chexbres.
- The Queen Studio Experience inside the Casino, free to enter.
- Glion and Caux above town for empty balcony views over the lake.
Getting around
Montreux is on the main Geneva-to-Milan line, an hour from Geneva airport and 25 minutes from Lausanne, and is the terminus of the GoldenPass panoramic route to Gstaad and Interlaken. The town is walkable along the lake and the Chillon path takes 45 minutes on foot. Boats, buses, the funicular and cogwheel trains cover everything else; a Swiss Travel Pass or regional card usually pays off.
Safety
Montreux is extremely safe with negligible crime, and the main risks are financial rather than physical: Switzerland is expensive and last-minute train tickets are punishing. The lake path can be windy and cold outside summer, mountain weather at Rochers-de-Naye changes fast, and July's jazz festival makes accommodation scarce across the whole Riviera.
