Ninh Binh, Vietnam travel guide
Halong Bay on land: limestone towers, rowboat cave rivers and rice paddies two hours from Hanoi.
- Best time to visit: March-May & September-November
- Average daily budget: $25 to $70 USD
- Ideal trip length: 2 to 3 days
Ninh Binh is what people picture when they picture Vietnam: karst peaks rising straight out of flooded rice fields, sampans rowed by foot through river caves, and goats grazing on cliffs above ancient temples. Trang An and Tam Coc do the heavy lifting, but the pleasure is in the flat backroads between them, best taken by bicycle. Joy Plus splits the boat routes, the viewpoint climbs and the Hanoi transfer so you never queue twice.

Getting around
Ninh Binh is about two hours from Hanoi: limousine vans door-to-door are easiest, trains run to Ninh Binh station, and buses go from Giap Bat. Once here, a bicycle handles almost everything as the terrain is flat, and scooters or a hired driver cover Bai Dinh and Cuc Phuong. Boats are rowed by local families; the fare is per boat with a small tip expected.
Safety
Very safe, with the main risks being sunburn and heat on the Mua Cave steps and slippery limestone after rain. Wear proper shoes for the climb and carry water. Boat rowers may pressure you to buy drinks or tip heavily mid-river; agree on nothing beyond the official ticket and tip modestly at the end. Rent scooters only with a licence and insurance, and check for International Driving Permit requirements.
Frequently asked questions
Is Ninh Binh worth visiting?
Yes. It delivers Halong Bay's karst scenery without the boat crowds, and adds temples, caves and cycling through rice fields. Two days is enough for Trang An, Mua Cave, Tam Coc and Hoa Lu, and it slots neatly between Hanoi and the trip south.
Trang An or Tam Coc: which boat trip is better?
Trang An if you only do one. It runs about three hours through nine caves and past temples, in a UNESCO-listed landscape, with less hassle. Tam Coc is shorter, about two hours, and is at its best in late May and June when the rice turns gold, but sellers on the water can be pushier.
How do you get from Hanoi to Ninh Binh?
Limousine minivans take about two hours door-to-door and are the easiest option. Trains from Hanoi to Ninh Binh station take 2-2.5 hours and are cheap and scenic. Public buses from Giap Bat station are cheapest. Many people also come as a long day trip, though staying overnight is far better.
How many days do you need in Ninh Binh?
Two nights, three days is ideal. Day one for Trang An and Hoa Lu, day two for Mua Cave at sunrise plus Tam Coc and cycling, and an optional third day for Cuc Phuong National Park or Bai Dinh pagoda. A single day trip from Hanoi only scratches the surface.
When is the best time to visit Ninh Binh?
March to May and September to November have the most comfortable weather. Late May and June bring the golden rice harvest at Tam Coc, which is the most photogenic window but also hot. Summer is humid with afternoon storms, and winter can be grey, cool and drizzly.
How many steps is Mua Cave?
About 500 stone steps to the top ridge, split between the dragon summit and the pagoda peak. It takes 20 to 30 minutes at a steady pace. Go at sunrise or late afternoon, wear grippy shoes as the stone is polished and slick when wet, and carry water since there is no shade.
Can you visit Ninh Binh as a day trip from Hanoi?
You can, and organised tours do it, but the day is long and you will typically get only one boat route plus Mua Cave with no time to cycle. Staying one or two nights lets you see the valley at sunrise and sunset, which is when the karsts look their best.
