Pattaya, Thailand travel guide

Thailand's high-energy beach city: island day trips, floating markets and a nightlife scene that never sleeps.

  • Best time to visit: November-February
  • Average daily budget: $35 to $90 USD
  • Ideal trip length: 2 to 4 days

Pattaya is two hours from Bangkok and a world away in mood: a crescent bay of beach clubs and longtail boats, with the clear-water island of Koh Larn a short hop offshore. Yes, Walking Street is neon and loud, but the city has quietly grown up: seafood on the sand at Naklua, cliff-top temples, floating markets and some of Thailand's best-value beach hotels. Joy Plus splits the party from the paradise and builds the version of Pattaya you actually want.

Getting around

Buses from Bangkok's Ekkamai and Mo Chit terminals run every 30 minutes (about 2 hours, 130 THB), and direct buses link Suvarnabhumi Airport to Pattaya in under two hours. In town, blue baht buses (songthaews) loop Beach Road and Jomtien for a flat 10-20 THB; Grab and Bolt work well. Ferries to Koh Larn leave from Bali Hai Pier; speedboats can be hired anywhere on the beach.

Safety

Pattaya is generally safe for tourists, but use common sense in nightlife areas: watch your drink, agree taxi fares upfront and keep valuables minimal. Jet-ski rental scams are a known issue, so photograph any vehicle before renting. Swim at guarded beaches; rip currents appear in monsoon season. Road accidents are Thailand's biggest travel risk, so avoid scooters unless experienced and insured.

Frequently asked questions

Is Pattaya worth visiting?

Yes, if you plan beyond Walking Street. The Koh Larn island day trip rivals far pricier destinations, the Sanctuary of Truth is one of Thailand's most extraordinary buildings, and the beaches at Wongamat and Jomtien are relaxed and family-friendly. It's also the easiest beach escape from Bangkok.

How many days do you need in Pattaya?

Two to four. One day for Koh Larn, one for the Sanctuary of Truth, Big Buddha Hill and the floating market, plus time for the beach or nightlife. Most travellers combine it with Bangkok as a 3-4 day add-on.

How do you get from Bangkok to Pattaya?

Buses leave Ekkamai (Eastern) terminal every 30 minutes and take about two hours. Direct buses from Suvarnabhumi Airport take under two hours and are the easiest option if you land in Bangkok. Private taxis take 90 minutes to two hours depending on traffic.

Is Pattaya good for families?

Surprisingly, yes. Jomtien beach, the Cartoon Network water park, the Sanctuary of Truth, Nong Nooch Tropical Garden and the island day trips are all family favourites. Base yourself in Jomtien or Naklua and you'll barely notice the nightlife zone exists.

When is the best time to visit Pattaya?

November to February: dry, sunny and around 28-32°C. March to May is hot, June to October brings monsoon showers, usually short afternoon bursts, but seas can be rough for island trips. Pattaya is one of Thailand's drier coastal cities year-round.

Is Pattaya safe at night?

The main tourist and nightlife areas are well-policed and busy until late. Standard precautions apply: keep an eye on drinks, carry minimal cash, use Grab or Bolt rather than random motorbike taxis late at night, and avoid disputes with bar or venue staff.

Which is better, Pattaya or Phuket?

Different trips. Phuket has better beaches, resorts and diving but needs a flight and bigger budget. Pattaya is a cheap, easy 2-hour escape from Bangkok with island day trips, big-city conveniences and nightlife. Many travellers do Bangkok plus Pattaya when short on time.
