Hidden gems

  • The serene, near-empty Baby Taj, with detail rivalling the Taj Mahal.
  • Sunset views of the Taj from Mehtab Bagh garden across the river.
  • Wandering the vast, often-overlooked palaces inside Agra Fort.
  • The eerie, beautifully preserved ghost city of Fatehpur Sikri.

Getting around

Agra's sights are spread out, so you'll need transport between them. Auto-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws are cheap for short hops, while Uber and Ola apps work well and offer fair, fixed prices, the easiest option for tourists. For a full day, hiring a car with driver or an auto for several hours is convenient and inexpensive. Note that petrol vehicles are banned near the Taj Mahal to protect the marble, so you'll be dropped a short distance away and continue by electric cart, cycle-rickshaw or on foot.

Safety

Agra is generally safe, with violent crime against tourists rare, but it's known for persistent touts, aggressive vendors and scams, especially around the Taj Mahal, fake guides, gem and marble cons, and inflated prices. Be firm and polite, book guides through official channels, and agree all fares in advance. Solo female travellers should take extra care, dress modestly, avoid isolated areas after dark, and ignore unwanted attention. Watch for pickpockets in crowds, drink only bottled water, and be cautious with street food if you have a sensitive stomach.
