Almaty in 3 days

A green, leafy metropolis pressed against snow-capped peaks, where the steppe meets the mountains. Best time to visit: May-June and September-October. Average daily budget: $40 to $80 USD.

Day 1, Get oriented

Base: Golden Quarter (Centre), The walkable heart: leafy avenues, cafés, boutiques, Panfilov Park and the main museums.

Morning: Medeu & Shymbulak. Take the gondola chain from the high-altitude Medeu rink up to Shymbulak for alpine views and hikes.

Evening: Cable car to Kok-Tobe. Ride up for the classic panorama of the city against the mountains, best at sunset.

Base: Panfilov Park area, Around the candy-coloured Zenkov Cathedral, a wooden orthodox church built without nails.

Morning: Big Almaty Lake. A surreal turquoise glacial lake in the mountains, an easy half-day trip from the city.

Evening: Green Bazaar (Zelyony Bazar). Graze horse meat, fermented mare's milk, dried fruit and honey in the city's liveliest market.

Day 3, Hidden side

Base: Medeu & Shymbulak, The mountain gateway above the city: the famous ice rink and the ski resort beyond it.

Morning: Ride up to Shymbulak and Medeu. From the city, a cable car climbs to the Medeu skating rink and Shymbulak ski resort high in the mountains, with stunning alpine views year-round.

Afternoon: Explore Medeu & Shymbulak, The mountain gateway above the city: the famous ice rink and the ski resort beyond it.

Evening: The Soviet-mosaic bus stops and the Arasan Baths, a grand bathhouse complex in the centre.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Eat: Shashlik and samsa from the Green Bazaar

Getting around

Central Almaty is flat and walkable, with a clean, cheap metro and plentiful buses. Yandex Go rides are very affordable for crossing town or reaching the mountain gateways. For Big Almaty Lake, Charyn Canyon and the high peaks you'll want a driver or organised tour, as public transport is limited.

Safety

Almaty is generally safe and relaxed, with the usual big-city precautions for pickpockets in markets and crowds. Mountain weather changes fast and altitude is real above Shymbulak, so carry layers. Tap water is best avoided; stick to bottled or filtered.
