Getting around

Central Almaty is flat and walkable, with a clean, cheap metro and plentiful buses. Yandex Go rides are very affordable for crossing town or reaching the mountain gateways. For Big Almaty Lake, Charyn Canyon and the high peaks you'll want a driver or organised tour, as public transport is limited.

Safety

Almaty is generally safe and relaxed, with the usual big-city precautions for pickpockets in markets and crowds. Mountain weather changes fast and altitude is real above Shymbulak, so carry layers. Tap water is best avoided; stick to bottled or filtered.
