Hidden gems

  • The Roman theatre in Populo, free, largely unvisited and one of the biggest in Roman Spain.
  • Mercado Central's rincon gastronomico, where market stalls fry and serve what came in that morning.
  • The sea walls walk from Alameda Apodaca to Parque Genoves at dusk.
  • Playa de Santa Maria del Mar, a small local beach that visitors overlook for Victoria.

Getting around

The old town is small and entirely walkable, and you can cross it coast to coast in 20 minutes. Buses and a tram-train run out to Playa Victoria and the newer districts. Cercanias trains reach Jerez in 40 minutes and Seville in about 1 hour 40, and a catamaran crosses the bay to El Puerto de Santa Maria in half an hour.

Safety

Cadiz is a relaxed, low-crime city where walking home late in the old town is normal. Watch belongings on packed carnival nights and on city beaches, and respect Atlantic conditions: currents and rip tides at Victoria and Cortadura are stronger than the Mediterranean, so swim near lifeguarded sections. The Levante wind can make beach days unpleasant.
