Day 1, Get oriented

Morning: Monte San Salvatore funicular. Ride up for a 360-degree panorama over the lake to the Alps.

Evening: Lake Lugano boat trip. Cruise to Gandria and Morcote, the prettiest villages on the shore.

Day 2, Go deeper
Base: Paradiso, The lakefront district below San Salvatore with the funicular base and hotels.
Morning: Parco Ciani & LAC. Stroll the lakeside park then take in the LAC arts centre's exhibitions and concerts.

Evening: Bellinzona's three castles. Day-trip 30 minutes north to the UNESCO-listed medieval fortress complex.

Day 3, Hidden side
Base: Castagnola & Monte Brè, Terraced slopes east of town with the Olive Trail and a hillside village.
Morning: The Olive Trail path from Castagnola to Gandria through terraced groves.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Getting around
Lugano is 40 minutes from Milan Malpensa by shuttle bus and about two hours from Zurich by fast train through the Gotthard base tunnel. The compact centre is walkable, though it is hilly, with a funicular linking the station to the old town. Boats, buses and the two mountain funiculars cover the rest, and the Ticino Ticket given free by hotels covers most local transport.
Safety
Lugano is very safe with low crime, and the everyday risks are minor: steep lanes and stairs, strong summer sun on the lake, and occasional violent thunderstorms in late summer. Swimming areas are supervised in season but the lake drops off quickly. Prices are Swiss even though the feel is Italian, so budget accordingly.
