Getting around

Máncora's compact centre is walkable, with the main beach, restaurants, bars and surf shops close together, and you can also flag the ubiquitous mototaxis (tuk-tuks) for short hops along the coast to beaches like Las Pocitas, Vichayito and Los Órganos. To explore further, whale-watching at Los Órganos or turtle-swimming at El Ñuro, you'll use mototaxis, taxis or organised trips. Máncora has no airport of its own; most visitors fly into Piura (about three hours south) or Tumbes (roughly two hours north) and continue by taxi, transfer or bus, while long-distance overnight buses connect Máncora with Lima and other Peruvian cities. Renting a scooter is another popular way to get around.

Safety

Máncora is a relaxed, tourist-friendly beach town that is generally safe for visitors, backpackers and solo travellers, though as a busy party destination it pays to take normal precautions. Petty theft is the main concern, so secure valuables, don't leave belongings unattended on the beach, and be mindful in crowded nightlife spots; watch your drinks and travel sensibly at night. In the water, respect currents and rip tides, follow surf-school and lifeguard advice, and choose reputable operators for boat trips and whale-watching. The Pan-American Highway runs through town, so take care crossing and on mototaxis. Use strong sun protection given the equatorial sun. With everyday care, most visitors find Máncora safe and easygoing.
