Getting around

The center around the Macroplaza and Paseo Santa Lucía is walkable. Uber and Didi are widely used and inexpensive, and taxis are best ordered through apps. Monterrey has a metro system, but most visitors prefer rideshare. The city is spread out, so a car is useful for mountain day trips and the Grutas de García. Monterrey International Airport (MTY) is 30 minutes northeast of the center.

Safety

San Pedro, San Jerónimo, the Macroplaza area and Fundidora Park are safe and well policed. Some outlying neighbourhoods and areas near the state border have higher risk and should be avoided. Do not drive intercity highways at night, and use Uber or Didi rather than street taxis. Monterrey is hot and dry in summer; hydrate and plan mountain hikes early in the morning.
