Hidden gems

  • The less-visited Santa Elena Reserve, quieter than the main park with equally rich wildlife.

  • The orchid garden with hundreds of species, many tiny and exquisite.

Getting around

Santa Elena is small and walkable, though the hills are steep and the roads can be rough and muddy. Taxis are available and reasonably priced. To reach the various reserves, hanging bridges and adventure parks, most visitors use organised shuttles, tours or rent a 4x4. The road from the Interamericana highway up to Monteverde is famously bumpy and slow; allow at least 90 minutes from the main road. There are direct shuttle buses from San Jose, La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio.

Safety

Monteverde is extremely safe, with a strong eco-tourism infrastructure and friendly community. Use standard precautions: secure valuables, stay on marked trails in the reserves and avoid hiking alone in remote areas after dark. The cloud forest is wet and slippery, so good hiking boots with grip are essential. Weather changes rapidly, so bring waterproof layers. Stick to bottled water.
