Getting around

Puerto Viejo is small and best explored by bicycle, which you can rent everywhere for about $5 a day. Taxis and colectivo vans run the coastal road to Manzanillo and Cahuita. Local buses connect to San Jose via Limon, about 4 to 5 hours. The town itself is entirely walkable. For day trips further afield, shuttles and private drivers are available.

Safety

Puerto Viejo is generally safe but use standard beach-town precautions: don't leave valuables unattended on the beach, lock bikes properly, and avoid unlit areas late at night. The Salsa Brava surf break is for experienced surfers only and has a serious reef. Mosquitoes are active at dusk, especially in the wet season, so use repellent. Tap water is usually safe but many travellers prefer filtered.
