Getting around

A car is essential, and for Corolla's 4x4 beaches you need a four-wheel-drive vehicle with deflated tires. NC-12 is the single road down the islands and floods or washes out in storms, so check conditions. The free Hatteras-Ocracoke ferry runs roughly every 30 minutes in season, with lines at peak times.

Safety

Very low crime; the real hazards are ocean and road. Rip currents cause most Outer Banks rescues, so swim near lifeguards and learn to float and swim parallel to shore. Never walk on dunes or vegetation, watch for red-flag no-swim days, and leave the islands if a hurricane evacuation is ordered, as NC-12 is the only way out.
