Getting around
Dong Hoi is the gateway: it has an airport with flights from Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, and sits on the north-south train line, then it is a 45-minute shuttle or taxi to Phong Nha. Sleeper buses run direct from Hue, Hanoi and Ninh Binh. In the park, scooters are the way to ride the loops, and every hostel arranges cave tours with transport included.
Safety
Caves must be entered only with licensed operators; the park has genuine hazards including flash flooding, and several routes close from roughly September to December in the wet season. The region is one of the most heavily bombed areas of the war, so unexploded ordnance remains a real risk, never leave marked paths. Scooter roads are quiet but wet and winding, and mobile coverage drops in the park.
