Day 1, Get oriented

Base: Downtown (101), The colourful old town. Hallgrímskirkja, Laugavegur shopping street, the harbour.

Morning: Golden Circle day trip. Þingvellir + Geysir + Gullfoss. Self-drive or small group tour. 8 hours.

Evening: Sky Lagoon at sunset. Better than the Blue Lagoon. Smaller, locals' choice, edge-of-the-Atlantic infinity pool.

Day 2, Iconic sights

Base: Grandi (Old Harbour), Whale watching tours, street art, Marshall House gallery.

Morning: Northern Lights chase (Sep-Mar). Drive 30 min out of the city for darker skies. Check vedur.is forecast first.

Afternoon: Explore Grandi (Old Harbour), Whale watching tours, street art, Marshall House gallery.

Evening: Hunt the Northern Lights. From September to April, drive 20 minutes out of the city's light pollution on a clear night, or take a guided aurora tour. Check the aurora forecast and dress for the cold.

Eat: Lobster soup at Sægreifinn (Old Harbour)

Day 3, Local neighbourhoods

Base: Laugardalur, The big geothermal pool, botanic gardens, where families live.

Morning: South Coast day trip. Waterfalls, black sand beaches, glacier views, ice caves in winter. Long day, worth it.

Afternoon: Explore Laugardalur, The big geothermal pool, botanic gardens, where families live.

Evening: Drive the Golden Circle. Þingvellir's continental rift, the Geysir hot springs and Gullfoss waterfall in one self-drive loop from the city. Rent a car, start early, and have the big sights nearly to yourself.

Eat: Lamb at Grillmarkaðurinn

Day 4, Day trip or nature

Base: Vesturbær, Quiet, residential, walking distance from downtown.

Morning: Bæjarins Beztu - the world's best hot dog, $5, served from a kiosk since 1937.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Afternoon: Explore Vesturbær, Quiet, residential, walking distance from downtown.

Evening: Kex Hostel bar for live folk music with locals.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Eat: Skyr (Icelandic yoghurt) for breakfast - everywhere

Day 5, Slow finish

Base: Hafnarfjörður, The lava-town suburb. Quirky, supposedly full of elves, worth a half-day.

Morning: Reykjadalur hot river - hike 45 min, soak in a naturally-heated stream.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Getting around

Walk downtown - it's tiny. Rent a car for day trips and ring road exploration. Buses cover the city but most travellers don't need them. The airport is 45 min away - book the Flybus shuttle in advance.

Safety

Safest country in the world. Solo travellers, including women, walk anywhere at any hour. The real danger is the weather - check forecasts before any drive, sandstorms can flip cars on the south coast.
