Berlin in 5 days

A city that parties until Monday and thinks about art the rest of the week. Best time to visit: May-September. Average daily budget: $70 to $120 USD.

Day 1, Get oriented

Base: Mitte, The historic core. Brandenburg Gate, Museum Island, the Holocaust Memorial.

Morning: East Side Gallery at sunrise. The longest stretch of Berlin Wall still standing, painted by artists. Empty and powerful before 8am.

Evening: Museum Island day. Pergamon, Neues Museum, the bust of Nefertiti. Buy the day pass and pace yourself.

Day 2, Iconic sights

Base: Kreuzberg, Street art, Turkish markets, canal-side bars, the city's anarchist soul.

Morning: Sunday at Mauerpark. Karaoke in the amphitheatre, flea market stalls, Berliners doing Berlin things.

Afternoon: Explore Kreuzberg, Street art, Turkish markets, canal-side bars, the city's anarchist soul.

Evening: Lake swimming at Weissensee or Schlachtensee. City beaches, cold water, no salt. Bring a picnic.

Eat: Currywurst at Curry 36

Day 3, Local neighbourhoods

Base: Neukölln, Berlin's coolest quarter. Palestinian bakeries, craft cocktail bars, Wes Anderson vibes.

Morning: Walk the East Side Gallery. The longest surviving stretch of the Berlin Wall, painted with 100-plus murals along the Spree. Walk it early, then cross the Oberbaumbrücke into Kreuzberg for coffee.

Afternoon: Explore Neukölln, Berlin's coolest quarter. Palestinian bakeries, craft cocktail bars, Wes Anderson vibes.

Evening: Sunday at Mauerpark flea market. Berlin's best flea market plus the legendary outdoor Bearpit Karaoke in the amphitheatre. Hunt vinyl and vintage, grab a currywurst, and stay for the chaotic, joyful singalong.

Eat: Palestinian brunch at Yafo in Kreuzberg

Day 4, Day trip or nature

Base: Prenzlauer Berg, Gentle, leafy, family-friendly, with the best brunch in the city.

Morning: Teufelsberg - Cold War listening station turned street-art canvas on a man-made hill.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Afternoon: Explore Prenzlauer Berg, Gentle, leafy, family-friendly, with the best brunch in the city.

Evening: Pfaueninsel (Peacock Island) - a UNESCO-listed island in the Havel with free-roaming peacocks.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Eat: Craft beer at BRLO Brwhouse

Day 5, Slow finish

Base: Friedrichshain, Raw club culture, the East Side Gallery, Volkspark Friedrichshain.

Morning: Klunkerkranich rooftop bar on top of a Neukölln shopping centre.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Afternoon: Explore Friedrichshain, Raw club culture, the East Side Gallery, Volkspark Friedrichshain.

Evening: Hofbräuhaus Berlin is a tourist trap - drink at Brlo Brwhouse instead.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Getting around

Berlin's U-Bahn and S-Bahn cover everything. Buy a 24-hour AB ticket. The city is flat - cycling is huge and safe. Avoid cars; parking is a nightmare.

Safety

Extremely safe. Violent crime is rare. Watch for bike theft (lock both wheels) and scams on Alexanderplatz. Solo travellers of all genders feel comfortable here day and night.
