Getting around

San Francisco is compact but very hilly. The Muni network (buses, metro, and historic streetcars) plus BART covers the city; cable cars are a fun but slow, tourist-priced ride. Walking is great if you're up for the hills. Uber and Lyft are everywhere. BART links the airport to downtown. For Muir Woods and wine country, a rental car or tour is needed.

Safety

San Francisco is generally safe, but car break-ins are a serious, frequent problem, so never leave anything visible in a vehicle. Some areas (the Tenderloin, parts of SoMa and Mission Street) have visible homelessness and drug use and are best avoided, especially at night. Dress in layers, as the fog makes it surprisingly cold even in summer.
