A modern, cheap metro plus trams, trolleybuses and buses cover the wider city, and the metro reaches the airport in about 30 minutes. Tickets are inexpensive, ride-hailing is cheap, and a lift or bus takes you up Vitosha mountain on the city's edge for hiking or skiing.

Safety

Sofia is generally safe and comfortable for solo travellers including women. Violent crime is rare; the main cautions are pickpocketing on busy trams and around markets, occasional unofficial taxi overcharging (use apps or marked meters), and uneven pavements. Use normal city sense and you'll find it a relaxed, easy capital.
