Base: Mid Island, Condo towers and family resorts with quieter stretches of sand and easy beach parking.
Morning: Walk the Birding and Nature Center boardwalk. Nearly a mile of boardwalk over wetlands with alligators, herons, and roseate spoonbills, plus a five storey observation tower.

Evening: Take a dolphin watching trip. Bottlenose dolphins live in the ship channel year round, and small boats from the bay side get close in about 90 minutes.

Morning: Climb the Port Isabel Lighthouse. The only Texas lighthouse open to the public, with a 75 step climb to views over the island, the bay, and the Gulf.

Getting around
A car is useful, though the free island trolley loops the main strip in season. Brownsville airport is 40 minutes away and Harlingen about an hour. Bikes and golf carts are popular for short hops.
Safety
Swim near lifeguards and respect rip current flags, which are common near the jetties. Spring break in March brings very large crowds and heavy police presence. Watch for jellyfish in summer and stay off marked dune and turtle nesting areas.
