A car is useful, though the free island trolley loops the main strip in season. Brownsville airport is 40 minutes away and Harlingen about an hour. Bikes and golf carts are popular for short hops.
Safety
Swim near lifeguards and respect rip current flags, which are common near the jetties. Spring break in March brings very large crowds and heavy police presence. Watch for jellyfish in summer and stay off marked dune and turtle nesting areas.
