Getting around
Suzhou has no airport; fly into Shanghai (Hongqiao or Pudong) and take the high-speed train, which reaches Suzhou in 25 to 40 minutes and runs constantly. In the city, the metro covers the main sights and the old town is best on foot, by boat or by taxi/Didi. Most nationalities need a Chinese visa; the 144-hour transit exemption covers the Shanghai-Jiangsu region for eligible onward itineraries.
Safety
Suzhou is very safe and relaxed by big-city standards. Watch for slippery stone bridges in the rain, keep bags close in crowded garden entrances, and book Suzhou Museum and popular gardens online in advance, as walk-up entry often sells out on weekends. Standard China notes apply: carry your passport, and Google services require workarounds.
