Hidden gems
- Tham Phu Kham cave above Blue Lagoon 1, with a reclining bronze Buddha in the dark.
- Pha Poak, the shorter, quieter viewpoint climb when Nam Xay has a queue.
- The organic mulberry farm north of town for goat cheese and mulberry shakes.
- Cycling the west-bank dirt roads through rice fields at golden hour.
Getting around
The Laos-China high-speed railway puts Vientiane about an hour away and Luang Prabang about an hour north; book ahead as trains fill. Minivans still run the old road. In town, everything is walkable, and bicycles, scooters and buggies are cheap for reaching lagoons and viewpoints. Tuk-tuks handle group trips. Most nationalities can get a Laos visa on arrival or an e-visa.
Safety
The wild days are over, but common sense still applies: never dive head-first into lagoons, avoid tubing when the river runs high in the wet season, and don't ride a scooter on dirt tracks without experience or insurance. Methanol-tainted spirits have been a documented problem in Laos, so avoid free shots and unbranded local spirits and stick to sealed bottled or canned drinks. Caves require a guide and a working headtorch.
