Chiang Mai, Thailand travel guide
The original digital-nomad town. Mountains, temples, $1 noodles, sunset over the moat.
- Best time to visit: November-February (cool, dry season)
- Average daily budget: $25 to $50 USD
- Ideal trip length: 5 to 7 days
Chiang Mai is what travellers come to Thailand for once they're done with Bangkok. The walled Old City is full of temples, the Nimman district runs on flat whites and laptops, and the mountains start 20 minutes from town. Joy Plus paces it slow: mornings at temples, afternoons in cafés, evenings at the Sunday Walking Street.

Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Chiang Mai?
Five to seven days. Three for the city, one for Doi Suthep + cooking class, one for Doi Inthanon, and at least one slow café day.
Is Chiang Mai better than Bangkok?
Different, not better. Bangkok is intense and urban. Chiang Mai is slow, cheap, mountain-adjacent, and easier on first-time solo travellers.
Is Chiang Mai good for digital nomads?
It's the city that invented the modern nomad scene. Fast wifi, $300 apartments, dozens of coworking spaces, and a huge community in Nimman.
Is Chiang Mai good for digital nomads?
It's one of Asia's top nomad hubs, cheap, friendly, fast wifi and a huge café and coworking scene in Nimman. A comfortable month costs a fraction of a Western city.
Should I visit an elephant sanctuary in Chiang Mai?
Yes, but choose an ethical one, no riding, no shows, with elephants free to roam. Look for genuine sanctuaries like Elephant Nature Park and book directly to avoid greenwashed middlemen.
When should I avoid Chiang Mai?
February to April is burning season, when agricultural fires choke the air with smoke and AQI spikes. Come November to January for cool, clear weather instead, the city's best stretch.
When is the best time to visit Chiang Mai?
November-February (cool, dry season) is the sweet spot for weather and crowds. Shoulder season brings lower prices and easier bookings, while peak months mean higher accommodation costs and longer queues at the best known sights, so book early if you travel then.
How much does a solo trip to Chiang Mai cost?
Budget on roughly $25-$50 USD per day in Chiang Mai as a solo traveller. That covers a hostel bed or simple room, local food, getting around and a couple of paid sights. Mid-range comfort with private rooms, sit-down dinners and the odd tour runs closer to double, while shoestring travellers who cook and stick to street food can come in under it.
Is Chiang Mai safe for solo female travellers?
Chiang Mai is generally a comfortable place to travel solo, including for women, as long as you use normal city sense. Very safe, even at night. Burning season (Feb-April) is the real hazard, air quality drops hard. Check AQI before you book if you're sensitive.
