Day 1, Get oriented
Base: Old City, Inside the moat. Temples, hostels, the Sunday Walking Street.
Morning: Doi Suthep temple at sunrise. Beat the tour buses. Hire a red truck for 200 baht.
Afternoon: Explore Old City, Inside the moat. Temples, hostels, the Sunday Walking Street.
Evening: Sunset at Doi Suthep temple. The golden mountain temple above the city. Climb the naga staircase, ring the bells, and catch the valley view as the sun drops. Go late afternoon to beat the tour buses and the heat.
Eat: Khao soi at Khao Soi Khun Yai
Day 2, Go deeper
Base: Nimman, Cafés, coworking, modern Thai food, where nomads live.
Morning: Sunday Walking Street. Closes Rachadamnoen Road. Best street food, crafts.
Afternoon: Explore Nimman, Cafés, coworking, modern Thai food, where nomads live.
Evening: Sunday Walking Street night market. Ratchadamnoen Road closes to traffic and fills with handicrafts, street food and live music. Graze your way through, khao soi, grilled skewers, mango sticky rice, and shop the artisan stalls.
Eat: Sai ua (northern Thai sausage) at any market
Day 3, Hidden side
Base: Santitham, Cheaper than Nimman, more local, still walkable.
Morning: Cooking class at a farm. Half-day classes with market visit, around $30.
Afternoon: Explore Santitham, Cheaper than Nimman, more local, still walkable.
Evening: Doi Inthanon day trip. Highest peak in Thailand. Waterfalls, twin pagodas, cool air.
Eat: Mango sticky rice at the Sunday market
Hidden gems
- Wat Umong, the forest temple with tunnels.
- Khao Soi at Khao Soi Khun Yai (cash only, closes 2pm).
- Sticky Waterfalls (Bua Tong), you actually walk up them.
- Free yoga at Wat Suan Dok on weekday evenings.
Getting around
Walk inside the Old City. Songthaews (red trucks) are 30-60 baht for short hops. Grab works for longer rides. Renting a scooter is normal, but only if you're confident in traffic.
Safety
Very safe, even at night. Burning season (Feb-April) is the real hazard, air quality drops hard. Check AQI before you book if you're sensitive.
