Getting around

From Tokyo, the Odakyu Romancecar runs from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto in about 85 minutes, or take the shinkansen to Odawara and a local train. The Hakone Free Pass covers the loop: mountain railway, cable car, ropeway, lake cruise and buses. Everything connects in a circuit, so most visitors ride the loop clockwise or counter-clockwise.

Safety

Hakone is extremely safe, as is Japan generally. Owakudani's volcanic gases occasionally close the ropeway section, so check status, and the sulphur vents are off-limits for those with respiratory conditions. Trails are well marked but weather changes fast in the mountains; carry a layer even in summer. Onsen etiquette: wash before entering, no towels in the water, and note many baths restrict tattoos.

Frequently asked questions

Is Hakone worth visiting from Tokyo?

Yes. Ninety minutes from Shinjuku, it packs hot springs, a volcanic valley, a lake cruise and Fuji views into one loop. It's Japan's classic easy mountain escape and the most atmospheric way to break up a Tokyo stay.

Can you do Hakone as a day trip?

Yes, the full loop of mountain railway, ropeway, Owakudani and the Lake Ashi cruise fits in a long day from Tokyo. But staying one night in a ryokan with onsen baths and a kaiseki dinner is the experience Hakone is famous for, so overnight is strongly recommended.

Is the Hakone Free Pass worth it?

Almost always. The two-day pass costs around ¥6,100 from Shinjuku and covers the return train plus unlimited use of the loop's railway, cable car, ropeway, cruise and buses, which bought separately cost significantly more.

When can you see Mount Fuji from Hakone?

Fuji is clearest on cold, dry mornings from November to February, and often hidden by haze or cloud in summer. Your best odds are early morning from the ropeway or Lake Ashi. Seeing it is a bonus, so plan the trip for the onsen and scenery either way.

When is the best time to visit Hakone?

March to May for spring blossoms and October to November for fiery autumn leaves are the peak seasons. Winter offers the clearest Fuji views and steaming outdoor baths in the cold; summer is green but humid, hazy and busy with domestic tourists.

How much does a ryokan in Hakone cost?

Expect ¥20,000 to ¥40,000 per person per night with dinner and breakfast at a mid-range ryokan, from around ¥12,000 at simple inns and ¥60,000+ at luxury properties with private open-air baths. Prices are usually per person, not per room.

How do you get from Tokyo to Hakone?

The Odakyu Romancecar limited express runs directly from Shinjuku to Hakone-Yumoto in about 85 minutes for roughly ¥2,500. Alternatively, take the Tokaido shinkansen from Tokyo Station to Odawara (35 minutes) and transfer to the local Hakone Tozan line.
