Getting around

Bari Karol Wojtyla airport is 15 minutes from the centre on the Ferrotramviaria train or airport bus. The city centre is flat and walkable, with the old town and Murat quarter easily covered on foot; buses and a bike-share fill in the beaches. Regional trains reach Polignano, Monopoli and Trani in under an hour, while Ferrovie Appulo Lucane serves Alberobello and Matera, so no car is needed unless you want the Valle d'Itria back roads.

Safety

Bari is safer than its old reputation suggests, but petty theft is a real issue: keep bags closed in Bari Vecchia, avoid leaving anything visible in a parked car, and be alert around the port and station at night. Scooters move fast through pedestrian alleys. Swimming near the city beaches is fine, though water quality is better a few kilometres out. Summer heat regularly tops 35C.
