Getting around
The city centre is small and walkable, with the clock tower, markets and night bazaar all close together. The temples and tea country are spread out, so rent a scooter, hire a driver or join a day tour to reach the White Temple, Blue Temple and Golden Triangle. Songthaews (shared red trucks) and tuk-tuks cover shorter hops; agree fares first.
Safety
Chiang Rai is calm and safe, comfortable for solo travellers including women, with violent crime rare. The main risks are road accidents on rented scooters, so wear a helmet and ride cautiously, especially on hill roads. Other practical notes: agree tuk-tuk fares in advance, watch for seasonal burning-season haze around March-April, and carry water for hot temple days.
