Getting around
The island centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end and best explored on foot. Local buses reach Blarney and the suburbs; trains from Kent Station run to Cobh, Midleton and Dublin in about two and a half hours. Cork Airport is 15 minutes south by bus. A car helps for the Wild Atlantic Way but isn't needed in the city.
Safety
Cork is a friendly, low-crime city. The main issues are weekend closing-time rowdiness on Oliver Plunkett and MacCurtain Streets and occasional pickpocketing in the English Market crowds. Quays are unfenced in places, so take care walking home along the river. Rain is constant, so footpaths get slippery; pack waterproofs.
