Getting around

The centre is walkable, if hilly between quayside and Grainger Town. The Tyne and Wear Metro is cheap and fast, reaching Gateshead, Tynemouth, the coast and the airport in under 30 minutes. Trains from Newcastle Central reach Durham in 15 minutes, Edinburgh in 90 and London in about three hours.

Safety

Newcastle is welcoming and generally safe, but the Bigg Market and quayside get extremely busy on weekend nights, with alcohol-related trouble and pickpocketing the main risks. Use licensed taxis late, keep valuables secure in crowded bars, and take care on steep steps and quaysides in the rain. The coast is windy and cold water year-round.
