Getting around
The MTR is fast, cheap, spotless and signed in English - get an Octopus card on arrival and use it for trains, trams, ferries and shops. The double-decker trams ('ding ding') on the island are slow but scenic, and the Star Ferry is a sight in itself. You rarely need a taxi.
Safety
Hong Kong is one of the safest major cities in the world, with very low violent crime and easy solo travel day or night. Standard care with pickpockets in crammed markets. Summer heat and humidity are the real challenge, and typhoon season (July-September) can disrupt plans.
