Getting around
The subway and JR loop cover everything - get an ICOCA card on arrival. Osaka is compact and walkable around Namba and Umeda. For day trips, Kyoto is 15 minutes by rapid train and Nara about 45, so a regional rail pass pays off fast.
Safety
Osaka is extremely safe, even late at night in the nightlife districts. Locals are famously chatty and helpful. The main 'risk' is overeating. Standard care with belongings in the busiest market crowds, but petty crime is rare.
