Hidden gems

  • The ramparts walk along the top of the Old City walls.
  • The Austrian Hospice rooftop café for tea and a quiet panorama.
  • Hezekiah's Tunnel in the City of David, waded by torchlight.
  • Ein Karem, a village-like neighbourhood of churches and cafés on the city's edge.

Getting around

The Old City is car-free and explored entirely on foot over uneven stone - wear good shoes. The modern Light Rail and buses link West Jerusalem, the central bus station and Damascus Gate cheaply, but stop on Shabbat (Friday evening to Saturday evening). Taxis and apps (Gett) run throughout. Sherut shared taxis fill gaps on Shabbat. Distances within the centre are walkable; for the Mount of Olives or Ein Karem, take a taxi or bus.

Safety

Jerusalem is generally safe for tourists and heavily policed, and solo travellers move around the main sites comfortably. That said, the wider region's security situation can change quickly, so check your government's current travel advice before and during your trip, avoid demonstrations, and follow local guidance. Dress modestly at all holy sites (covered shoulders and knees; head coverings where required). Respect Shabbat and prayer times. Petty theft is rare but possible in crowded markets.
