Day 1, Get oriented

Base: Walled City (Androon Lahore), The Fort, Badshahi Mosque, Delhi Gate bazaars and restored havelis.

Morning: Badshahi Mosque at golden hour. One of the world's largest Mughal mosques, glowing red sandstone beside the Fort.

Afternoon: Explore Walled City (Androon Lahore), The Fort, Badshahi Mosque, Delhi Gate bazaars and restored havelis.

Evening: Walled City food street and Delhi Gate. Haveli rooftops, phajja's paya for breakfast and the chaotic beauty of the old bazaars.

Eat: Lahori chargha, whole spiced chicken steamed then fried

Day 2, Go deeper

Base: Mall Road & Museum district, Colonial-era institutions, the Lahore Museum and Kim's Gunj cannon.

Morning: Lahore Fort and the Sheesh Mahal. The UNESCO-listed citadel with the mirrored Palace of Mirrors and Mughal audience halls.

Afternoon: Explore Mall Road & Museum district, Colonial-era institutions, the Lahore Museum and Kim's Gunj cannon.

Evening: Wagah border ceremony. The theatrical daily flag-lowering at the Pakistan-India border, 45 minutes away.

Eat: Siri paya (slow-cooked trotter stew) for a traditional breakfast

Day 3, Hidden side

Base: Gulberg, Leafy modern district with restaurants, cafés and boutique shopping.

Morning: Wazir Khan Mosque's frescoed interiors, a Mughal jewel inside the old city.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Afternoon: Explore Gulberg, Leafy modern district with restaurants, cafés and boutique shopping.

Evening: Thursday night qawwali (Sufi devotional music) at the Shrine of Shah Jamal.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Eat: Butt karahi, wok-cooked chicken with ginger and green chilli

Hidden gems

  • The Lahore Museum's Gandhara collection and the original 'Kim's Gun' (Zamzama).

Getting around

Allama Iqbal International Airport is 30 to 45 minutes from the centre. Careem and Uber work well and are inexpensive; the Metrobus and Orange Line metro cover key corridors. The old city is best on foot or by rickshaw with a guide. Most nationalities can apply for Pakistan's e-visa online in advance; check current requirements for your passport.

Safety

Tourist Lahore, especially the Fort, mosque, museums and Gulberg, is generally welcoming, and visitors consistently report remarkable hospitality. Check your government's travel advisory before booking and register with your embassy if advised. Dress modestly, use a reputable guide in the walled city, avoid political gatherings, and keep valuables discreet in crowded bazaars.
