Islamabad in 3 days

Day 1, Get oriented

Base: F-6 & F-7 (Kohsar and Jinnah Super), The upscale market districts: cafés, restaurants and the city's social heart.

Morning: Faisal Mosque. The desert-tent icon at the hills' foot; visit at golden hour as the call to prayer echoes.

Evening: Hike Trail 3 or 5 in the Margalla Hills. Pine-forest trails to viewpoints over the whole capital.

Eat: Chapli kebab: Peshawar's flat, spiced beef patty, perfected in Islamabad's markets

Day 2, Go deeper

Base: Margalla Hills, The national park on the city's northern edge with hiking trails and viewpoints.

Morning: Daman-e-Koh and Monal. The hilltop viewpoint and restaurant complex above the city.

Evening: Lok Virsa Museum. Pakistan's finest ethnographic museum, the perfect primer before heading north.

Eat: Sajji: whole slow-roasted lamb or chicken with rice, Balochi style

Day 3, Hidden side

Base: Saidpur Village, A restored 500-year-old village of restaurants and craft shops at the hills' foot.

Morning: Rawal Lake at sunset, with birdlife and boat rides beneath the hills.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Evening: The shrine of Bari Imam, the city's Sufi heart, just outside the grid.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Eat: Halwa puri breakfast at an old Rawalpindi dhaba

Getting around

Islamabad International Airport is 25km west; the metro bus and taxis reach the centre in 40 to 60 minutes. In the city, Careem and InDrive are the standard apps and very cheap; the metro bus links Islamabad to Rawalpindi. For the north, PIA and Airblue fly to Gilgit and Skardu when weather allows; the Karakoram Highway runs year-round with delays. Many nationalities now get Pakistan e-visas online.

Safety

Islamabad is Pakistan's safest major city, with a visible security presence. Check your government's current travel advice before planning, and register with your embassy. Respect local customs: dress modestly, ask before photographing people, and avoid mosques at prayer times unless invited. For northern areas, check road and permit conditions, and always travel with local advice on weather and security.
