Getting around

Nara's main sights are walkable from Kintetsu Nara Station, with the park, Todai-ji and Naramachi all within a pleasant stroll. Local buses loop to the temples for those wanting to save their legs, and an IC card (Suica/ICOCA) covers them. For Nishinokyo's temples, take a short train or bus hop.

Safety

Nara is very safe, like the rest of Japan, with minimal crime and easy solo travel for all, including women. The main caution is the deer themselves: they can nip or headbutt for food, so feed them calmly and watch children. Bow back, don't tease them with crackers, and tuck away paper maps and tickets the deer like to eat.
