Hidden gems

  • Tomboy Road to an abandoned mining town above treeline

Getting around

Telluride Regional Airport (TEX) is five minutes away but weather-sensitive; Montrose (MTJ) is 65 miles and far more reliable, with Denver a six-hour drive. Once there you do not need a car: town is nine blocks long, the gondola runs to Mountain Village until midnight, and a free in-town shuttle loops Colorado Avenue.

Safety

Crime is almost nonexistent. Altitude is the main risk, with town at 8,750ft and Mountain Village higher, so drink water and go easy on alcohol the first night. Backcountry avalanche danger is real in winter, afternoon lightning is a genuine hazard above treeline in summer, and Black Bear Pass has killed inexperienced drivers, so hire a guide for 4x4 passes.
