Getting around
Tromso's centre is small and walkable, with most restaurants, bars and museums within a few blocks. City buses cross the bridges to the Arctic Cathedral, the cable car and the airport, which sits just 10 minutes from town. For fjords, aurora spots and outlying islands you'll rely on organised tours or a hire car, the latter useful for self-guided aurora chasing - though winter driving demands care on icy Arctic roads.
Safety
Tromso is extremely safe, and the main risks are the cold and the elements rather than crime. Dress in proper insulated layers with windproof outerwear, grippy boots and ice cleats, as pavements get treacherous in winter. Daylight is scarce in deep winter and constant in summer, which can disrupt sleep - pack an eye mask. On tours, follow guides' advice around water, ice and wildlife, and check aurora and weather forecasts.
