Getting around
Central Cologne is very walkable, with the cathedral, old town and river all close together. An efficient U-Bahn, tram and bus network (KVB) covers the wider city, and a single ticket or day pass is good value. Trains link the airport in about 15 minutes and reach nearby Rhine cities quickly, while riverside paths make walking and cycling a pleasure.
Safety
Cologne is generally safe and comfortable for solo travellers including women. The main risks are pickpocketing around the cathedral, the main station and during big events, plus rowdy crowds during carnival. The area immediately around the Hauptbahnhof can feel edgy at night, so use normal city caution and stick to busy streets.
